The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal John D. Lutz (ASN: 52124), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Etienne-a-Arnes, France, October 3 – 9, 1918. Corporal Lutz fearlessly exposed himself to a close range, enfilading fire of a German automatic rifle. He continued to lead his men throughout the battle after being wounded.
