The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Reuben Brent Hutchcraft, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 166th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Sedan, France, 7 November 1918. Captain Hutchcraft personally took command of a platoon of his company which was designated as advance guard and led his patrol to the most advanced point reached by any of our troops during the engagement. He was killed while making reconnaissance within 30 yards of enemy machine guns.
