The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Terry Nichols Hendricks, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery E, 12th Field Artillery, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mont Blanc, France, 4 October 1918. During the course of a terrific bombardment by the enemy, which forced the firing battery to take shelter, and when two of the gun crew were seriously wounded, Lieutenant Hendricks voluntarily left cover and, without regard for his own safety, carried the wounded men through heavy fire to a place of safety.
