The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Henry Peter Garside (ASN: 39290), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Beaumont, France, November 1 – 5, 1918. On duty as a company runner, Private Garside repeatedly carried messages unflinchingly through heavy enemy machine-gun and shell fire with utter disregard for personal safety.
