The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Luther Edward Ellis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in Bois-d’Ormont, France, 23 October 1918. Captain Ellis personally led his company against a strongly held enemy machine-gun position. During the advance he was shot through the lung. When wounded his men halted to render first aid, but he ordered them forward. His example of gallantry contributed greatly to the success of the attack.
