The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Antonio Aiello (ASN: 106825), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 4th Machine-Gun Battalion, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vierzy, France, 19 July 1918. Private Aiello voluntarily left the safety of the trench, advanced nearly a hundred yards in the open under heavy artillery fire, and carried back to safety a severely wounded marine.
