The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Charles Bradford Smith (ASN: 0-22113), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action at Haeju, Korea, on 17 October 1950. His battalion had encircled the city, cutting off the escape route of hundreds of the enemy, who dispersed throughout the city as packets of resistance and individual snipers. Determined to prevent these troops from organizing effective delaying action he aggressively led his battalion’s assault elements into the city. With complete disregard for his own safety, he continually exposed himself to intense small arms fire, directing his troops in eliminating the enemy force. Colonel Smith’s gallant actions were an inspiration to his command and reflect the greatest credit on himself and the United States Infantry.
