The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert L. Hendricks (MCSN: 2235429), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as 60-mm. Mortar Section Leader of Company H, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 24 February 1968, Corporal Hendricks was directing the delivery of 60-mm. mortar fire on suspected hostile positions in Quang Nam Province. Suddenly an enemy grenade landed in the midst of his emplacement. Reacting instantly, he shouted a warning to the two Marines manning the mortar and, disregarding his own safety, fearlessly groped about in the darkness until he located the grenade. As he hurled it from the position, the grenade detonated, wounding Corporal Hendricks. His heroic and timely actions saved the lives of his two companions and were an inspiration to all who served with him. By his courage, sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Corporal Hendricks upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
