The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John C. Gruver (AFSN: 0-53730), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Aircraft Commander of an UH-1F helicopter in Southeast Asia on 25 March 1967. On that date, Captain Gruver flew gunship cover for an assault party that drew fire in the landing zone. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Gruver flew through hostile fire to support the evacuation of one wounded man and then landed in the beleaguered clearing to evacuate a second wounded man himself. Subsequently, he returned to the same area and hovered under fire for a sustained period to recover the third wounded soldier. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Grover reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
