The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Henry Kirk, Jr. (AFSN: 0-20794A), United States Air Force, for meritorious service as Operations Officer and Commander of the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in operations against an opposing armed force from 19 July 1967 to 28 October 1967. During this period, Colonel Kirk motivated his men to the point where his undermanned squadron was flying far in excess of the programmed combat flying hours with only 76 percent of the aircraft available. His outstanding leadership and innate ability to communicate with enlisted personnel improved the squadron On-the-Job Training passing rate from 42 percent to 92 percent. The exemplary leadership, personal endeavor, and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Kirk in this responsible position reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
