The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant James Eugene McInerney, Jr. (AFSN: 0-23452), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 10 May 1955 as Pilot of an F-86F type aircraft with the 84th Fighter Bomber Wing, FIFTH Air Force. While flying the element lead on the lead flight of an eight aircraft formation on an essential patrol mission over International Waters off the west coast of North Korea, the squadron was attacked by approximately sixteen MiG type aircraft. Approximately sixteen additional MiG type aircraft were circling above. Lieutenant McInerney immediately engaged with a flight of the attacking aircraft and by exercising superior flying ability and excellent judgment, did outmaneuver them and did fire at one inflicting severe damage on it. The aircraft was last seen smoking and heading downward indicating it was probably destroyed. By his high personal courage, skill and devotion to duty, Lieutenant McInerney has brought credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
