The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Third Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in addition to a previously awarded Silver Oak Leaf Cluster lieu of a Ninth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Major James Helms Kasler (AFSN: O-2221728/24551A), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as the leader of a flight of F-105 fighter-bombers two miles west of Phu Tho, North Vietnam on 22 July 1966. On that date, Major Kasler led his flight against and successfully destroyed a heavily defended railroad bridge along the vital Hanoi-Lao Cay railroad. He then directed and accounted for the destruction by strafing of a motor powered lighter, three trucks, a tug boat, a barge and three buildings. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Major Kasler reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
