The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Clarence R. Whitlock (ASN: 0-1996589), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 February 1945, in Germany. Direct enemy tank and sniper fire encountered at the outskirts of a town forced the men of First Lieutenant Whitlock’s platoon to dismount from the tanks upon which they were riding. Determined to continue the attack despite the hazards, First Lieutenant Whitlock, ignoring the intense fire directed on him, reorganized his men and courageously led them forward to seize the town. His gallantry and outstanding leadership reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
