The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Will B. Wharton (ASN: 0-1287449), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 November 1944, in Germany. When intense enemy fire was received prior to reaching the final objective, First Lieutenant Wharton jumped to his feet in the face of heavy machine gun and tank fire and began to rally his men for the final push. A shell hit very close to him, knocking him down and bruising him to the extent that breathing was difficult. Insisting on continuing the advance with his men, First Lieutenant Wharton walked forward, supported by four of his men and remained with the company until the objective had been reached and the defenses of the new position established. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Wharton, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
