The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Wesley J. Watts (ASN: 34057956), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 July 1944, in France. Private Watts was serving as a rifleman and acting in capacity of squad leader with an infantry force engaged in a bitter fight with the enemy. When his squad leader was seriously wounded, Private Watts assumed command and led his men successfully through heavy machine gun and mortar fire. Private Watts was killed during the course of the action, but by his inspirational leadership an important tactical objective was secured. The personal bravery, indomitable fighting spirit, and courageous aggressiveness displayed by Private Watts reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
