Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 107 (November 27, 1944), Amended by General Orders No. 123 (December 15, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) Sam F. Warren (ASN: 0-371756), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 793d Field Artillery Battalion (Separate), in support of the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period from 16 October 1944 to 22 October 1944, in Germany. Major Warren was assigned the mission of destroying structures and tanks in an enemy-held town preparatory to a concentrated attack by friendly infantry troops. Major Warren personally elected to act as forward observer in this mission. Although under extremely heavy enemy fire, he established his observation post in a house across the street from where the enemy was located. Despite the fact that during the progress of the ensuing battle, an enemy counterattack reached the very premises from which he was observing, Major Warren gallantly remained at his post to direct devastating fire on the enemy, which contributed immeasurably to the successful completion of the mission assigned to the 973d Field Artillery Battalion. Major Warren’s unswerving devotion and unexcelled bravery are worthy of the highest merit and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
