The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Fred J. Voorhees (ASN: 31010798), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 3d Tank Battalion, 10th Armored Division, in action against the enemy at Margaret, Belgium, on 19 December 1944. When his crew was forced to abandon their tank recovery unit near enemy lines, Technical Sergeant Voorhees, recovery unit commander, courageously established a line of defense, directed the evacuation of the wounded and supervised an orderly withdrawal. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
