The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Anthony P. Viggiano (ASN: 32215112), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division on 16 July 1944, in France. Sergeant Viggiano was assigned to duty with an infantry assault group engaged in an extremely fierce battle with the enemy. During the fight, when he saw one of his comrades fall, Sergeant Viggiano crawled over an exposed area subjected to continuous artillery, mortar and small arms fire in order to administer first aid and evacuate the wounded man. This unselfish and gallant act, performed at the risk of his life, saved the life of the wounded soldier. The fortitude, aggressive loyalty, and determined devotion to his comrades displayed by Sergeant Viggiano reflect great credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
