Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 209 (November 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Patrick J. Spinarelli (ASN: 32564734), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 November 1944, in Germany. During a fierce engagement with the enemy, Staff Sergeant Spinarelli and his mortar section were approaching cross roads when intense enemy artillery fire forced them to take cover in nearby houses. Upon reaching the houses they received word that one of their comrades was lying wounded and unable to move. Staff Sergeant Spinarelli immediately started toward the wounded man. Although he was forced to take cover from the fierce fire he succeeded in crossing fifty yards of open terrain. He quickly picked up the wounded man and made the hazardous return trip. Reaching the house he applied first aid and arranged for the man’s evacuation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Spinarelli, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
