Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 120 (December 12, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William M. Spicer (ASN: 20456949), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1944, in France. Sergeant Spicer was advancing with his unit when it was pinned down by fire on both flanks from concealed enemy machine guns. Disregarding the danger to himself, Sergeant Spicer boldly advanced under the fire toward one of the guns intending to silence it. Before he could reach the gun he was wounded, but despite his wound he persisted in crawling back to his men and pointed out to them the location of the machine gun, with the result that it was destroyed. The outstanding courage displayed by Sergeant Spicer and his unwavering determination to carry out his mission are consistent with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
