The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert Sojourner, Jr. (ASN: 34637007), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in in France, on 28 July 1944. When an assault platoon of his company was pinned down by machine gun fire as it approached a hedge, Private First Class Sojourner voluntarily crawled forward in an attempt to knock out an enemy position. Completely disregarding his own safety, he crawled 50 yards while fully exposed to machine gun and small arms fire. As he arose on one knee to throw a grenade into the enemy positions, he was killed by fire from the enemy. Although he failed to neutralize the position, the men in his platoon were so inspired by his gallant actions that they pushed on and destroyed the enemy emplacement. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Sojourner, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
