The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Andrew Simone, Jr. (ASN: 32192574), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 August 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Simone observed a comrade lying wounded and exposed to enemy fire. He crept and crawled under fire for fifty yards. As he neared his wounded comrade, Staff Sergeant Simone discovered the exact position of the enemy and with a well placed shot killed an enemy rifleman. A second enemy soldier then jumped from his position and charged Staff Sergeant Simone. With a quick, accurate shot, Staff Sergeant Simone killed this enemy. He then carried his wounded comrade to safety. Staff Sergeant Simone’s gallant and aggressive actions resulted in saving his comrade’s life. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Simone, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
