Headquarters, 2d Armored Division, General Orders No. 41 (June 10, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant George J. Sheets (ASN: 0-4528839), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations against the enemy while serving with the 66th Armored Regiment, 2d Armored Division, in action on 4 March 1945 in Germany. On 4 March 1945, Reconnaissance Company was attached to Third Battalion as infantry, and proceeded from Krefeld-Oppun to the vicinity of Vennikel, Germany. During this time the company was frequently dismounted to clean out many pockets, and First Lieutenant. Sheets was usually in the lead tank, dismounting with his men. When the Battalion came into open country south of Vennikel, it was suddenly fired on by many 88-mm. anti-tank guns. After two of the tanks had been hit, Lieutenant Sheets ordered his men to dismount and seek cover. A plan of attack was drawn up and Lieutenant Sheets mounted the men up again and rode with the first wave of the tanks across a flat open field. During this time the tanks were exposed to direct 88-mm. fire. As the tanks over-ran each enemy position successfully, Lieutenant Sheets dismounted with his men at each place and personally led them in cleaning out the enemy personnel.
