    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William C. Shaw, Jr. (ASN: 0-528199), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 July 1944, near ****, France. During an engagement with the enemy, Second Lieutenant Shaw, leading his platoon over a hedgerow, came face to face with a group of enemy soldiers. When one of the enemy hurled a hand grenade at him, with great presence of mind, he picked it up and threw it back. During the encounter Second Lieutenant Shaw succeeded in killing three of the enemy and capturing two. The courage, quick thinking and able leadership displayed by Second Lieutenant Shaw enabled his platoon to take their objective. His performance of duty reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
