The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Robert Serviss (ASN: 39472074), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 April 1945, in Germany. When friendly armor was held up by severe enemy fire, Technical Sergeant Serviss’ company was sent forward to clear the enemy from the strongpoint. As the company was advancing they were pinned down by machine gun fire. Technical Sergeant Serviss began crawling forward under the deadly fire until he was within grenade range of the position. He threw two grenades into the enemy position killing one of the gun crew. He then killed another of the enemy with fire from his rifle. Demoralized, the two remaining crew members quickly surrendered. With this position liquidated, the company was able to move swiftly forward and seize its objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Serviss, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Realizing the precarious position of his platoon which had become pinned down and was subjected to automatic, artillery, and mortar fire, Technical Sergeant Serviss crawled forward amid fire which rained all around him to a position where he launched a bazooka round which knocked out a machine gun. The surrounding riflemen became demoralized and threw down their weapons. The assault was then resumed by Technical Sergeant Serviss’ platoon and the objective rapidly seized. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Serviss, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
