Charles Rau graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1929. He was coach of the U.S. International Olympic Shooting Teams in 1952 to 1954. He retired I 1959 as a U.S. Army Colonel.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Armor) Charles Guthrie Rau, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of a Battalion of the 2d Armored Division, in action against the enemy during the invasion of Sicily, in July 1943. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Rau, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
