The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James W. Pye (ASN: 0-6969746), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the Medical Detachment, 6th Armored Division, in action in France on 1 October 1944. With another Aid Man he drove a vehicle through an area he knew to be mined in order to furnish aid to wounded men in a burning half-track. With complete disregard for his own safety, he treated and evacuated the men at the half-track. As he left the site, the vehicle exploded. His devotion to duty at the risk of his own life saved the lives of others. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
