Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 209 (November 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward S. Pierug (ASN: 42029464), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 19 December 1944, in Belgium. During a vicious engagement with the enemy, intense fire was received and the order was given to withdraw to alternate positions. One member of an anti-tank gun crew was seriously wounded and was unable to take cover from the enemy fire. Private First Class Pierug observed a comrade having a difficult time dragging the wounded man to cover. Quickly leaving his sheltered position, he crawled under the intense fire and assisted in bringing the wounded man to safety. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Pierug, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
