The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Third Grade Joseph J. Parinella (ASN: 39032578), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aid Man to an Infantry Company of the 91st Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy near Scarperia, Italy, during World War II. Technician Third Grade Parinella unhesitatingly moved into a barrage to administer aid to wounded. He went into the area nine times to evacuate casualties and was killed by a mortar shell while making the last of these trips. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
