Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 177 (July 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Rudy Ortiz (ASN: 39698051), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 March 1945, in Germany. When an assault platoon was pinned down by furious artillery and small arms fire, Private First Class Ortiz voluntarily crawled through the murderous fire with a radio to the platoon. He remained in an exposed position for two days without sleep or rest keeping his company commander well informed of the situation. As a result of Private First Class Ortiz’s heroic actions, another platoon was able to move forward abreast of the assault platoon to relieve it. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Ortiz, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
