Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 97 (November 9, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private] Charles L. Ogburn (ASN: 36780059), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 October 1944, in Germany. Sergeant Ogburn was serving with the lead platoon of an Infantry Battalion engaged in an attack toward an enemy-occupied village. The assault platoon was pinned down by hostile small arms fire and was further threatened by three enemy tanks which began moving forward in counterattack. Although Sergeant Ogburn was not organically a member of the bazooka team, he voluntarily advanced with a single companion to a position from which effective bazooka fire was delivered on the tanks, causing them to withdraw. His courageous act during a critical phase of the action was a contributing factor in the successful advance of his unit. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Ogburn, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
