Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 194 (July 18, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Homer C. Mitchell (ASN: 6960122), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 March 1945, in Germany. While moving forward with his squad under enemy fire to contact a patrol which had been cut off by the enemy, Staff Sergeant Mitchell was seriously wounded. In spite of his painful wounds, he courageously continued in his efforts to save the patrol. He located a route of escape which it could use, and then crawled painfully back to his squad and directed them to place covering fire over the route, thereby enabling the patrol to make their way to safety. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Mitchell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
