    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John F. McLacken (ASN: 31244136), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 July 1944, in France. Private First Class McLacken was helping his regimental command post group to their new location when he suddenly encountered an enemy force armed with automatic weapons. Although he was wounded in the engagement which followed, killing five of the enemy and forcing the remainder to disperse. Private First Class McLacken withdrew only after his ammunition was exhausted and then went with another soldier to report he situation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class McLacken, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
