The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Edward V. McCune (ASN: 34150698), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 October 1944. When his company was suddenly subjected to intense enemy fire during an attack and withdrew to allow for artillery concentrations on the enemy, Sergeant McCune remained behind to render aid to a scout who had been wounded. Although the scout was too seriously wounded to permit evacuation, Sergeant McCune gave him first aid treatment and remained with him for four hours under all kinds of enemy fire and friendly artillery fire. When the concentration on the area was lifted, he dragged the wounded man to the safety of friendly lines, undoubtedly saving his life. The courage and devoted care exercised by Sergeant McCune in behalf of a wounded soldier reflect highest credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
