Ralph Maness grew up in Missouri, and after theological training, he was ordained a Southern Baptist minister. During his years of ministry he pastored churches in Ash Grove, Long Lane, Knob Noster, and the First Baptist Churches in Lebanon and Springfield, all in Missouri. For two-and-a-half years he was Missouri Baptist State Evangelist. During World War II he entered military service and was commissioned a U.S. Army Chaplain, serving in the European Theater of Operations. He earned a Silver Star for his heroic actions in November 1944, and one month later on December 20, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, he was captured and held by the Germans as a Prisoner of War, and was interned until April 1945.
