The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Charles F. Leusner (ASN: 32240685), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 July 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Leusner was assigned to duty with an infantry unit engaged in an attack on the enemy. When one of his comrades was wounded by hostile mortar and artillery fire, Staff Sergeant Leusner ran to his assistance and at the risk of his life, in the face of continuous enemy from observed positions, carried his wounded comrade to a rear position. This unselfish heroism has been an inspiration to his comrades. Upon his return, Staff Sergeant Leusner received orders to withdraw his mortar section and reorganize. This he accomplished in a superior manner in spite of the heavy enemy fire which harassed his every movement. The superb soldiership, courage, and devotion to duty exhibited by Staff Sergeant Leusner reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
