The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Nevin J. Lehman (ASN: 33926490), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945 in Germany. In the early morning of the assault across the Rhine River when his platoon was held up by fire from an enemy machine gun position, Private Lehman volunteered to destroy the enemy position since the success of the mission depended largely on reaching the objective before daybreak. Crawling forward under intense enemy fire, he reached a point from which he could throw hand grenades into the emplacement, neutralizing its effectiveness. His daring initiative forced a group of twelve enemy soldiers protecting the machine gun position to surrender and enabled his company to resume its advance and gain its objective. The aggressiveness and audacity displayed by Private Lehman reflect highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
