The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Staff Sergeant Gordon L. Bair (ASN: 35150522), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while serving with Headquarters, 91st Infantry Division, in North Africa and Italy from 1 April 1944 to 9 September 1944. As Operations Sergeant, G-3 Section, Staff Sergeant Bair was responsible for the swift reproduction and dissemination of all field orders and overlays issued by the Division during combat in Italy, and despite all adverse conditions, performed in an outstanding and superior manner. By his initiative and leadership, he made maximum use of all field expedients, in order that subordinate units could receive the necessary data in time to make reconnaissance prior to engaging the enemy. The devotion to duty and rare judgment displayed by Staff Sergeant Bair aided greatly in the success of the Division in combat, and his actions reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
