The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) George C. Johnson (ASN: 0-1175180), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 326th Field Artillery Battalion, 84th Infantry Division, in action in Belgium on 23 to 24 January 1945. While adjusting artillery fire on enemy tanks and infantry troops from the top floor of a building which was within one hundred yards of the forward element, First Lieutenant Johnson, an artillery forward observer, though wounded by mortar fire which also disabled his radio receiver, directed such effective and accurate concentration for fire with his radio transmitter that the enemy force withdrew. Securing another radio, First Lieutenant Johnson, despite his wounds, continued to perform his duties with the attacking infantry company which his artillery unit was supporting. The conspicuous courage, resourcefulness and superior performance of duty displayed by First Lieutenant Johnson present an excellent example of those soldierly qualities which are in accordance with the finest traditions of the military service.
