The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James F. Jarrell, Jr. (ASN: 0-1322866), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 23 February 1945 to 24 February 1945, in Germany. Disregarding a fire fight, First Lieutenant Jarrell continued with his reconnaissance for a suitable crossing over the Roer River until he discovered that a bridge had been blown up. He then gathered a group of men and worked under continuous fire to construct a new bridge so that supplies could reach his regiment in time to facilitate a successful attack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Jarrell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
