The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Thomas D. Ingle (ASN: 0-2037063), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 6th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Munoz, Luzon, Philippine Islands on 5 February 1945. The advance of an infantry company was being impeded by intense fire from dug-in enemy tanks, machine guns and a number of pill boxes. Second Lieutenant Ingle, with two men, crawled forward to the pill boxes and threw white phosphorus grenades into them. He succeeded in destroying seven of the strongest points, killing an undetermined number of enemy personnel. Second Lieutenant Ingle’s gallant action cleared the entire left flank and made it possible for the company to continue its attack and secure its objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Ingle, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
