The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Lewis A. Hunnewell (ASN: 31398238), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 October 1944, in Germany. Sergeant Hunnewell took command of eight men and by skillful and aggressive action captured a large enemy patrol which was attempting to make its way through friendly lines, Later in the same action, Sergeant Hunnewell approached an enemy-occupied house alone and boldly opened fire on a group of the enemy as they were leaving the building, killing three, wounding several, and forcing the remainder to flee. Sergeant Hunnewell’s outstanding courage and aggressiveness reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
