Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 41 (August 12, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) David V. Hull (ASN: 0-1283965), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 June 1944 in France. During the street fighting in the city of Cherbourg the leading tanks were halted by an enemy artillery piece which was able to bring pointblank fire on them. Mortar fire was unable to dislodge the enemy and Lieutenant Hull set up an observation post in a building some 400 yards distant from the enemy position in order to direct artillery fire on it. The observation post drew heavy fire from enemy small arms and the artillery piece which had harassed the tanks. The building was riddled by machine gun fire and the enemy weapon scored a direct hit on the observation post but Lieutenant Hull nonetheless calmly continued to adjust fire for his battery until the enemy gun was neutralized. His devotion to duty and his complete disregard for personal safety reflect credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
