The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William T. Engisch (ASN: 0-1292157), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 175th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Villebaudon, Normandy, France, on 30 June 1944. On that date the regimental command post was subjected to intense enemy artillery fire, inflicting casualties. Shortly thereafter, the enemy fiercely launched an attack which seriously threatened the encirclement of the command post. Immediately, First Lieutenant Engisch, Headquarters Company, Executive Officer, summoned help, gathered all available personnel in his vicinity, organized an inner defense; then moved them to within a distance of 50 yards from the onrushing enemy, where his group under his inspiring leadership, repulsed the enemy attack. The intrepidity, aggressiveness and inspiring leadership displayed by First Lieutenant Engisch reflects great credit upon himself and the Military Service.
