The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Cavalry) Herbert F. Hillenmeyer (ASN: 0-382987), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during World War II. Assigned the task of supporting an infantry attack on an enemy-held hill, Captain Hillenmeyer, realizing the approaches to the objectives were well covered by several enemy anti-tank guns, led his tanks into the battle area. When his tank leading he combat formation was hit and set fire by enemy guns, Captain Hillenmeyer returned to the assembly area and, after securing another tank, re-entered the battle. Throughout this action, the courage, determination, and leadership displayed by Captain Hillenmeyer were a source of pride and inspiration not only to his own men but to all who fought with him. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
