The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Joseph T. Hart, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations during the period from 20 to 24 November 1943. Colonel Hart remained with the assault troops all the time his Infantry battalion was in contact with the enemy. Under fire from well emplaced machine guns and snipers, he continued to direct the forward elements. His leadership and personal supervision of the attack contributed to the accomplishment of the mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
