The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Kermit L. Harden (ASN: 16120594), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 94th Infantry Division. On 14 March 1945, near Heddert, Germany, Private Harden assumed command of his unit when the squad leader was wounded and evacuated. When heavy causalities were sustained during the close fighting, he vigorously pushed the attack and, leading a bold charge, overran and captured the enemy positions. During the intense engagement, the squad killed 20 Germans and captured 20 more.
