Headquarters, 9th Armored Division, General Orders No. 42 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Coast Artillery Corps) Adna Chaffe Hamilton, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of a Combat Command of the 9th Armored Division, in action against the enemy during the period from 1 to 15 March 1945, between the Roer and Rhine Rivers in Germany. Colonel Hamilton capitalized on the capture of the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine River, and frequently visited frontline battalions to assist, advise, and personally lead them to their assigned objectives. In one instance he re-organized a disorganized task force and led it to its objective. When elements of the combat command had secured the Ludendorff bridge at Remagen on 7 March, notwithstanding the concentrated enemy artillery and small arms fire, Colonel Hamilton effectively coordinated the movement of troops for the enlargement of the bridgehead. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Hamilton, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
