Headquarters, 7th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 27 (March 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Third Grade Frank Tadakazu Hachiya (ASN: 19005979), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 32d Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action on Leyte, Philippine Island, on 30 December 1944. A combat patrol of the rifle company was sent out to attack an indefinitely located enemy position protecting a regimental command post. Technician Third Grade Hachiya, a regimental interpreter, requested special permission to accompany the patrol. En route three enemy soldiers were seen to run into a bamboo thicket on the edge of a heavily wooded gorge. Technician Third Grade Hachiya immediately went to the spot and tried to talk the enemy out. He entered the thicket to pursue the enemy and try to capture them. He was required to take a two-man patrol with him but moved out rapidly ahead of the patrol in going down into the gorge. After Proceeding about one hundred yards, a 12-man enemy patrol in the bottom of the gorge opened fire, fatally wounding Technician Third Grade Hachiya. After being hit, and while laying helpless on the ground, he fired a complete magazine from his pistol at the enemy, driving them up the ravine. Technical Third Grad HachiyaÕs actions were an inspiration to the entire command and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
