Headquarters, 43d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 281 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Robert D. Granger (ASN: 20151399), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 43d Infantry Division, in action on Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. During an enemy counter-attack, Sergeant Granger heard the groan of a seriously wounded man lying in direct lane of fire of the enemy. With total disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Granger quickly ran across the hill and brought the wounded man back to safety. It was due to Sergeant Granter’s alertness, initiative and bravery that the wounded man’s life was saved. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
